Sales was never on my radar growing up or even during business school. My goal was to be an attorney; I was laser-focused on making that happen. Ironically, a serious car accident derailed that plan but ultimately set me on the path of a lifelong career in sales.
In my first year out of college, I worked as a paralegal, bookkeeper, and all-around “assistant” for a group of attorneys. I was also tending bar at night to pay my rent. I dreaded the early mornings and the legal work I was doing; I felt drained and disconnected. Had I spent nearly my entire life chasing a goal that would leave me miserable? I was gutted and felt lost.
Then, one of the attorneys I worked for, who was a mentor, reframed things for me. He told me that being a lawyer and a sales rep were similar—both are about selling, whether a story or a product. He contended that to be truly successful, I had to believe in what I was selling. He pointed out that I didn’t believe in the cases I was helping to draft, but if I could find a product that ignited a fire in me, I’d be unstoppable.
In 1996, I began my sales journey, and I had no idea that nearly three decades later, I’d be transitioning again—this time, into business ownership. When launching Vetta, I chose the title of Founder & Principal rather than CEO, CRO, or President. Many people encouraged me to embrace a higher title, but that’s not what matters most to me. I love my adaptability, flexibility, and drive to help my clients succeed. I love immersing myself in the people, companies, and products I believe in.
I’ve had the honor of working as an IC, a team lead, and a sales leader throughout my career. In each role, I stayed true to the core value of believing in what I was selling. The variety of my experiences has given me a unique perspective, allowing me to step into diverse client roles. At Vetta, I’m honoring that belief structure—without ego—and helping companies I believe in to grow. I’m actively selling, strategizing, and coaching leaders or account reps with my current clients.
My message today is simple: follow your passion, work hard, enjoy life, and never stop taking risks. Growing up in Indy, this quote hung on my wall:“Be brave enough to live creatively. The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You must leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You cannot get there by bus, only by hard work, risking, and by not quite knowing what you are doing. What you will discover will be wonderful: Yourself.”― Alan Alda
